C5/C9 Copolymer Petroleum Resin – Properties & Applications

C5/C9 Copolymer Petroleum Resin, also known as C5/C9 Composite Petroleum Resin, is a pale yellow to brown-yellow flake or granular solid with a relative density of 0.96–1.02 and a softening point of 90–120°C. It combines the excellent properties of both C5 and C9 petroleum resins, offering superior performance, higher iodine value than C9 resin, and excellent solubility. It is compatible with both polar and non-polar polymers, making it a versatile material for adhesives, rubber, plastics, and coatings.

Applications of C5/C9 Copolymer Petroleum Resin

1. Adhesive Industry

· Used in hot-melt adhesives (EVA, SBS), pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs), packaging adhesives, anti-corrosion lining adhesives, pipe adhesives, furniture edge-bonding adhesives, and carton-sealing adhesives.

· Enhances tackiness in rubber-based adhesives, tire repair adhesives, and sealants.

2. Rubber Industry

· Improves performance in tire rubber, nitrile rubber adhesives, reusable rubber products, and gaskets.

· Used in synthetic rubbers like cyclopentene rubber (CPR), EPDM, and norbornene rubber (for shock absorption).

3. Plastics & Polymer Modification

Acts as a modifier for engineering plastics (PP, PVC), general-purpose plastics, and plastic composites.

4. Inks & Coatings

· Enhances adhesion in printing inks, UV coatings, high-viscosity paints, and varnishes.

· Used as a binding agent in specialty inks and ink additives.

5. Other Fine Chemical Applications

· Flux agents (rosin-based & solder pastes).

· Lubricants, metalworking fluids, and industrial coatings.

6. Advantages Over Traditional Petroleum Resins

C5/C9 copolymer resin offers unique benefits compared to standard C5 or C9 resins:

· Enhanced Adhesion: The balanced C5/C9 ratio improves wetting properties, critical for high-strength bonding in automotive and construction adhesives.

· Thermal Stability: Performs reliably in high-temperature applications (e.g., tire manufacturing) without cracking or yellowing.

· Eco-Friendly Option: Low VOC content (<0.5%) aligns with green chemistry trends in coatings and adhesives.

Why Choose C5/C9 Copolymer Resin?

Better solubility than pure C9 resin.
 Higher compatibility with polar/non-polar materials.
Wide softening range (90–120°C) for flexible processing.
Low acid value (<1.0 mg KOH/g) for reduced corrosion risk.
